Scania Swedish engine maker meets Tier 4i
“We don't need a DPF to meet Tier 4i,” said Scania's head of engines Robert Sobocki.

Scania announced it is to supply engines for Doosan Infracore’s construction equipment portfolio, starting with the supply of its 13liter engine rated at 354hp for the DL450 wheeled loader.

This follows Scania’s displacement of Cummins and Caterpillar engines from the Terex Corporation, by supplying Swedish muscle for its Powerscreen and Terex brands – the latter involving the TA300 articulated dump truck.

“One of our strengths is that we can deliver highly fuel-efficient and reliable engines that fulfill the Tier 4i emissions legislation without the need for a diesel particulate filter,” said Scania head of engines and senior vice president Robert Sobocki. “In some applications we can offer a 20% saving in fuel consumption over some of our competitors.”

The power units are being supplied from Scania’s modular range of 9liter five-cylinder, 13liter six cylinder and 16liter V8 engines, and are being delivered with SCR emission control technology and XPi high pressure common rail injection.

In addition to meeting Tier 4i standards, these engines are also ready for Tier 4 Final, said Sobocki, needing only minor adjustments through the use of 5-10% of EGR, to meet 2014’s strict emissions legislation.

“We will only need to feed a small amount of exhaust gases back through the engine to clean-up exhaust gases on light duty cycles for Tier 4 Final,” he said. “When our engines are working under normal loads, SCR after-treatment comfortably achieves these targets, without needing any further engine cooling capacity or additional after-treatment processes.”

Sobocki added that OEMs like Scania’s simple, straightforward approach, which minimizes the impact on operators in terms of cost and maintenance requirements.

The firm said that its experience in using both types of emissions technologies for its on-road truck range – cooled EGR and SCR – has helped it to achieve off-highway emissions standards without the need for complex and expensive add-ons.
